What is perception checking?

Perception checking is a communication skill that involves validating one's understanding of a message or situation by clarifying and confirming it with the other person. It helps to ensure that there is a shared understanding between individuals and can prevent misunderstandings or misinterpretations.

There are three steps to perception checking:

  1. Describing the behavior or situation: Start by stating what you observed or experienced without adding any judgment or interpretation.
  2. Offering possible interpretations: Tentatively suggest different ways to interpret the behavior or situation.
  3. Requesting clarification: Ask the other person for feedback to see if your interpretations are accurate and if there is anything you may have missed or misunderstood.

Perception checking can help to prevent conflicts, improve relationships, and foster effective communication. By using this technique, individuals can confirm their understanding of others' perspectives and demonstrate empathy and active listening.
